Interactive demonstrations

Our interactive demonstrations include two components from ALIS, the web-based application and the iphone application. The aim of the Adaptive Living Interface System (ALIS) is to facilitate solar-powered living by supporting informed energy use decisions, and by transparently integrating energy consciousness into the daily routines of the residents – both inside and outside of the home. ALIS allows residents to control North House, and provides feedback and incentives through a set of distributed interfaces. These functions are available throughout the home across different platforms that are tailored to their location and intended use. The various interactive components were designed to address the different needs of the resident, whethery they are at home or away. Together, they help to reduce the complexity of solar-powered living and to encourage net-zero living by ubiquitously supporting the resident in energy use decisions throughout their daily life.

Share, compare and connect with others using a series of social networking tools.

The web application is a comprehensive system that is accessible from any desktop or laptop computer connected to the world wide web. The application provides a series of analytical tools to track energy use over time, and transforms the collected data into information to help residents make informed energy use decisions. This information is provided through Pulse Energy's Energy Management software. As providing feedback to the occupant is only one aspect of motivating energy conservation, the web application also allows the resident to create custom energy-efficient settings for the home, and provides social networking tools to encourage net-zero living on a broader scale.

The North House iPhone application allows the resident to connect to the house while at home or away. Within the mobile system, the resident has access to playful energy visualization tools, easy to use controls, access to community-based energy-reduction goals, along with the ability to receive notifications. This suite of tools is meant to help the resident make more informed energy-use decisions, while accomodating for the resident’s busy lifestyle.
